Pig Friday

Hands up who wants a pet pig?

I wanted a little pig of my own after reading Charlotte’s Web, but Mum wouldn’t let me have one.

In celebration of all things piggy here’s a song and a joke.

What are your piggy stories? Olivia? Reggie and Lou? Piglet and Mama?

Wintery Desserts

Oooh! It’s raining outside! Finally, a chance to start making my favourite wintery desserts. This is one of my very favourites – it involves using the stove and oven so you’ll need a grown-up to help out…

Sam’s Super Awesome Apple Crumble

Apple Mix Ingredients:
5 large granny smith apples
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup water
Frozen berries
Chocolate (I use dark chocolate)

Crumble Ingredients:
1/2 cup Almond Meal
1/4 cup SR Flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
80g butter/margarine
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

How To Make It!

Step 1 – the apple mix
Peel, core and slice the apples. (You might need a grown-up to help with the slicing and cutting)
Cook the apples, water & white sugar 5-10 mins in a covered pan until softened. (Get a grown-up to help cos this gets hot!)
Put the apples into a baking dish.
Poke large chunks of chocolate into the apples.
Add a layer of frozen berries.

Step 2 – the crumble
To make the Crumble, rub the butter into the other ingredients using your fingertips.
Depending on the day, you might need to add more almond meal or flour if the mix is too wet.
Cover the apples with the Crumble.
Sprinkle some extra brown sugar on top if you want to be extra naughty, and to get some bubbly caramelisation.

Step 3 – Cooking
Bake in a moderate (180-190C) for about 30mins. (Hot oven = grown-up help)

Serve with ice-cream for a super-decadent treat!
I use gluten & dairy free ingredients because I have some food allergies, and my friends all still lurve this dessert! This recipe can easily feed 8.

What’s your favourite cold-weather dessert?

Bunnies!

There were lots of super-cute bunnies at Story Time at Manning Library this morning.

If you’d like to make some bunny ears like ours here’s the template. Bunny Ears

If you don’t have a mask you could cut a strip of card to wrap around your head (like a sweatband) and glue the ears onto that.

We read lots of bunny and chick stories today, including Guess How Much I love You by Sam McBratney.

What are you favourite bunny books?

Boogie Woogie Oogie

There was a whole lotta wiggling ang giggling and silly good fun at at Manning Story Time this morning. Instead of making a craft after we had read our stories and sung our songs, as we usually do, we all had a bit of a boogie!

And the book that inspired all of this hokey-pokey fun was Animal Boogie by Debbie Harter.

Here’s a great animated version of the book:
